As we say goodbye (or good riddance) to 2016 there is a new fitness trend ready to bring in the new year…..crawling. Yes you heard me correctly, crawling is set to be all the rage according to Gymbox and the Independent. Crawling has lots of mobility and strength benefits, but it’s not just about reverting to your pre-walking state and getting everywhere on your hands and knees, there are lots of different ways to crawl:
The Bear Crawl is a full body movement that requires you to load your core by tucking your pelvis under and squeezing the abs. Once stable, create tension between your toes and fingers and move forward by moving your right hand and left foot and then alternating – all whilst keeping your knees as close to the ground as possible without them touching down. If it hurts, you’re probably doing it right.
The Lizard Crawl requires more co-ordination and, as you’re much lower to the ground, the pressure in your core is increased. The alternating motion of the bear crawl is, however, the same.
Finally the crab crawl stretches out your hip flexors and engages the thoracic spine as your pull your shoulders back and down. This, and the fact that you will really feel the burn in your gluten, means it’s a particularly great exercise for anyone who sits at a desk for 8 hours a day.
